With little rain and high temperatures this year, fire danger is earlier than normal. As a result of the October 2003 Fire Storms, the County of San Diego has amended an ordinance that requires residents to keep their properties free of fire hazards by creating a "defensible space".
Residents can comply with this "defensible space" by clearing combustible vegetation in a 100-foot radius around their home. Once you clear this space, you should not leave the ground bare. Plants and groundcover are needed in order to prevent erosion. In the first 50 feet nearest your home, you may plant fire resistant irrigated landscaping. The remaining 50 feet needs to be natural vegetation thinned and cut to no higher than 6 inches above ground. Any woodpiles should be kept at least 50 feet from any structure, and cleared of combustible vegetation in a 10-foot radius of the pile.
Additional information and a list of approved landscaping can be found on the City of San Diego website.
